8A - Solving the Problem
As a solution to commuters who wish they had bicycles, I believe that it would be very beneficial if UF had a bicycle program where there could be bicycles linked with smartphone apps located all over campus. These apps would require students to register into the bike system, and they would be able to hop onto any shareable bicycle that may be around. The bicycles would have built in security systems and GPS locators, rendering theft to be impossible. The GPS locators could also assist students with finding where the nearest bicycle is. Registering on the app would ensure that only faculty and students have access to the bicycles, and the GPS could make it so that the bicycle is unable to leave the campus. Say there are 500-1000 shareable bicycles on the campus, plenty of students would be able to commute to their classes or bus stops much faster. Once they are finished using the bicycle, another student can login and ride off.

I think that this is a very interesting solution to commuting problems on UF campus. I think you did a good job going in to detail and addressing all the concerns that people may have about your idea. Such as, the GPS and theft device you mentioned would be installed. My only questions are regarding the storage of the bikes, not only bike racks but what about over the summer when student population is cut drastically? Also is this going to be UF specific is your target audience going to expand to multiple college campuses?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that the bicycles could be constructed of non-corrosive materials and be shaft-driven (chainless) that way they could withstand the elements and be left anywhere. If a bicycle would need any sort of maintenance, log into the app and report that specific bike that way a bike mechanic can come and repair it on site. I suppose it doesn't necessarily have to be UF specific. USF actually has this system running already, and it has proven to be quite successful.
DeleteHi Cameron! After reading about your hypothesis and looking into how students at the University of Florida commute to campus. I believe that your solution would be very beneficial. I believe if there was a bicycle program that would save student so much time and wouldn’t have to take out a lot of time to commute to class. I believe many students would use this. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHello Cameron, great post. I think that this is a great solution to the opportunity you stated in the previous assignment. This would surely be used by a majority of the university. I do however one question, would there be monthly subscription payment? Overall, the post was well-written you did a great job detailing the solution. I look forward to reading your other posts.
ReplyDeleteNah, students already pay enough just for all the b.s. school requires. I suppose expanding on Christina's idea, there could probably be a similar system for the general Gainesville area that could charge a monthly subscription for regular non-student residents, keeping the UF network free for student use.
DeleteHello Cameron, Interesting solution to a prevalent problem for students on campus. I think a shared bicycle system would be a huge advantage for students who aren't able to afford cars or other expensive forms of transportation. I would love to hear about the specifics of the cost of a program like this, not only to make it, but the cost to the students and faculty that will utilize this service. This sounds like a great idea, keep going!
